This is lovely Sally, I want to have the first paragraph embroidered on a pillow. Having just retired in January, I am aware of entering a time of both expanded and diminished possibilities.
One opportunity I am looking forward to is spending time with my son at his forest retreat in Ulster County. Perhaps we can meet for lunch in Hudson or thereabouts later this summer. I expect to be there a week or two in Aug and another week or two in Sep/Oct.
Sally, this may be your best Substack post yet. (There are several sentences I feel called to jot down in a notebook, as they capture the specific pathos of aging in a manner I’ve not yet seen.) Brava.
I like your Suburu , admire your honesty, and love your spirit. Actually, the aging that you describe may feel like letting go, but the vividness of those memories are more like what I now know about aging. Surprising waves of memory come back, unannounced and meaning filled that feel like a life well-lived. Yours has certainly been that. All your regretting now is only of a dream that never happened. Those can't be real regrets. And instead of giving in to disappointment, there you are setting out again for more adventures in New Orleans. That is the Sally I know you to be and who always finds a way to make the road ahead worth traveling. We are all tuned in so keep us posted. And here's a big hug, too!
I'm a Subaru owner too! So fun. "I am now grafting an older, senior me onto the root stock of my younger sense of self. The process is working, but it is taking time for the senses of self to knit together." WOW.

Yes, let’s do that! You’ll be just across the river. We will overlap.

Very wise words, Joby. I appreciate them.
